Although he had played a few bit parts before, this film has the first substantial supporting role for Djimon Hounsou (credited as Djimon). On the DVD commentary track, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich proudly mention that although Steven Spielberg gave Hounsou his big breakthrough in Amistad (1997), they 'discovered' him before that.

After filming, while still in character as Torquemada, Lance Henriksen, during a visit to the Vatican, got out of a cab and started randomly yelling obscenities at a random stranger and chased them. Also, his then-girlfriend wanted to visit Italy at the time, but Lance just wanted to go back to the States due to having remained in character throughout the duration of the film's production.

During filming, Lance Henriksen and director Stuart Gordon clashed with each other frequently. He questioned Gordon's role as director and was opposed to the humor in the film. Eventually, Gordon surrendered and told Henriksen he could do whatever he pleased with the character of Torquemada and made peace with Henriksen by the time filming was finished.
