Stargate

Col. ONeil had secret orders to bring a nuclear bomb to the planet and detonate it as a preemptive strike if it appeared as though Earth would be attacked by an alien threat. Ra discovered the bomb, transported it to his ship, and reconfigured it - making it much more destructive - intent on sending it through the stargate to explode on Earth. Col. ONeil, Dr. Jackson, and their team from Earth assist the people of Abydos in a successful battle against Ra. They discover what Ra has done with the bomb and, at the last moment, while Ra is attempting to escape through his ship, they transport the bomb up to his ship, utterly destroying him. Col. ONeil returns to Earth. Dr. Jackson remains on Abydos with his newly wed wife, Shauri.

Although he had played a few bit parts before, this film has the first substantial supporting role for Djimon Hounsou (credited as Djimon). On the DVD commentary track, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich proudly mention that although Steven Spielberg gave Hounsou his big breakthrough in Amistad (1997), they 'discovered' him before that.
