The song sung by Carey Mulligan and Michael Sheen in the film is "Let No Man Steal Your Thyme," a traditional British and Irish folk ballad.
-
Carey Mulligan suggested Matthias Schoenaerts for the role of Gabriel Oak after having seen him in Rust and Bone (2012). Mulligan told Total Film, "The minute I saw Rust and Bone I called [director] Thomas Vinterberg and I was like, 'That's who I want!'. He's brilliant - one of those effortlessly manly actors".
-
Matthias Schoenaerts is the only non-British in the cast.
-
Thomas Vinterberg claims that when first reading the script, he knew by the tenth page that Carey Mulligan was his only choice for Bathsheba Everdene.
-

-
Matthias Schoenaerts, who plays a sheep farmer in this film, had previously played a cattle farmer in Bullhead (2011).
-
The scene where Bathsheba tries to impress Gabriel and his friends by wading in to a sheep bath with them and the animals had little Hollywood glamour to it. Carey Mulligan said: "That was so much fun, although slightly disgusting by the end of the day. The sheep were doing their business in the water. The boys whinged constantly but they were wearing wetsuits under their costumes - I was wearing no wetsuit, so I was basically swimming in sheep s*** all day, which was a joy."
-
Thomas Vinterberg revealed that he tried to change the ending, but changed his mind after the producer told him that he would have to follow the novel's ending (with Gabriel and Batsheba together) because the audience would know the end.
-
Third collaboration between director Thomas Vinterberg and cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen. The previous were Submarino (2010) and The Hunt (2012).
-
Thomas Hardy took the book's title from a line in Thomas Gray's 1751 poem "Elegy written in a Country Churchyard": "Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife, / Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray; / Along the cool sequester'd vale of life / They kept the noiseless tenor of their way."
-
This marks as the 5th film adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel. The very first film version was the silent film Far from the Madding Crowd (1915) released exactly 100 years before this updated version. (There's a 1909 film with same title but that film isn't based on Hardy's work - it's a Thomas A. Edison comedy).
-
Asked who she would have chosen if she had these three very different suitors in real life, Carey Mulligan chuckled as she quickly replied, "I probably would have gone for the guy with the baby lamb (Gabriel) in the first 20 minutes of the film."
-
The health and safety team on the film were concerned about the cast filming with sheep, but let Carey Mulligan ride a horse and she had a concussion after coming off. When she and Matthias Schoenaerts shot the last scene of the film, she came racing round the corner and got thrown off and landed on her head. Ten minutes later, they were filming the big declaration scene and she just dropped to her knees. Schoenaerts thought she was acting and just carried on, and then she slumped over. Mulligan told that she was genuinely concussed for about six weeks of the filming and there are parts that she doesn't remember.
-
Thomas Vinterberg's first English-language film since Dear Wendy (2005).
-
The movie was shot in 53 days.
