Dawn of the Dead ending explained (spoilers)

Stephen is bitten and changed into a zombie. Peter shoots him in the head.
In the end the bikers all break into the mall letting thousands of the living dead in. A bloodbath ensures.
Peter and a pregnant Francine escape via their helicopter on the roof. They fly off, low on fuel and seemingly nowhere safe to go.

Kenneth, Anna, Terry, and Nicole get on Steves boat and sail to the island. However, when they get there, it is infested with the zombies. The camera Terry is carrying falls on the dock when they run, and we see zombies dying left and right in front of it. As the flickering camera images of zombies turn into a cool credit sequence, we are left to wonder if the remaining survivors got back to the boat in time and managed to escape again. Much like the end of the orginal Dawn of the Dead.
