The concept of "flying piranhas" was an idea of a Warner Bros. executive.

The original director was Miller Drake, Roger Corman's head of post-production who had been suggested for the job by producer Jeff Schechtman. Drake proposed to bring back Kevin McCarthy from Piranha (1978), completely mutilated from the events of that film, and creating flying Piranhas out of some sort of revenge. He met with producer Ovidio G. Assonitis to discuss the film, but after a tense meeting, he learned from Schectman two days later that Assonitis had him fired and replaced by James Cameron.

One of the locations that James Cameron had found for the movie was a real morgue, but when it was time to shoot there, the crew found three dead corpses there, one being a little girl, and one which had been opened for autopsy. They tried to hide away the bodies the best they could, but actor Steve Marachuk decided to take a look anyway. He was horrified at what he saw and had to leave the set for 30 minutes. When hearse drivers finally came to collect the bodies during a lunch break, one of them dropped the autopsied body, causing gallons of real blood to spill over the floor, which Cameron had to clean himself before he allowed his cast back on the set.

In 2019, the CBS channel "Horror" (UK & Ireland) showed a low quality version of the film that appeared to use a 3x4 academy ratio telecine cropped version, that may well have been a digitized early 1980s version of the film. The tell-tale signs are, the image appears "soft", there is dirt from a print that was obviously well used, and the sound mix, especially during the ways on the beach scenes, has odd digital audio conversion artifacts.

James Cameron reused the flying piranha effects in Aliens (1986) for the face-huggers.

In an interview, James Cameron jokingly said, "I believe 'The Spawning' was the finest flying piranha movie ever made."

As of 2017, this is the only fictional feature film James Cameron has directed that does not have a title starting with the letters A or T. His only other theatrical film with a similar distinction is his IMAX documentary Ghosts of the Abyss (2003).
