The film takes place in Kitsap County, Washington. The Kitsap Penninsula is across Puget Sound from Seattle, and is home to both the Bremerton Naval Shipyards and the Bangor Submarine Base. A large part of the population are military personnel, and unlike in the movie, the area has a very low crime rate. The movie was actually filmed in Squamish, B.C. The opening scene was filmed on the Bowen Island ferry to Horseshoe Bay

This is the 2nd time that Baloo's fur is blue instead of gray. This was also the case in the 2nd Season of Jungle Cubs (1996).

With the exceptions of King Louie the Orangutan, Winifred the Elephant (Colonel Hathi's mate), and the wolf pack, all the characters from The Jungle Book (1967) return in this sequel. The character of King Louie was cut, because Disney would have had to pay the estate of voice actor Louis Prima had the character appeared in the film in any form. This problem must have been overcome eventually, because a new version of Louie appears in The Jungle Book (2016).

The part where Baloo scares Shanti was reused from Monsters, Inc. (2001) where Sully who is also voiced by John Goodman scares Boo who in that film was 2 years old while Shanti in this film is 10 years old.

In the first scene Mowgli describes Baloo as his best friend and Bagheera as a good friend. In The Jungle Book (1967) Mowgli has known Bagheera all his life, while he knew Baloo for a day and a half.

A plan for "The Jungle Book 3" involved Baloo and Shere Khan being captured, and sold off to a circus in Russia. So Mowgli, Shanti, Ranjan, and Bagheera would have to save them, and Shere Khan would have changed his ways because of his capture. Corey Burton would've replaced Tony Jay as the voice of Shere Khan. But after John Lasseter became CEO of Disney and Pixar, and due to the film's lackluster box-office returns, the idea, along with ideas for several other Disney sequels were scrapped.
