Tim Burton included scenes as an homage to Disney's animated version of the Sleepy Hollow tale (featured in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)). These include the scene in which Ichabod Crane crosses the covered bridge and hears the frogs underneath croaking "Ichabod" and "Headless Horseman", the following chase sequence where Ichabod is run down and unhorsed, apparently by The Headless Horseman, and the moment in the climactic chase scene in which Ichabod runs into a tree limb, and, thrown through the air, ends up landing on the Horseman's horse backwards.

In The 39 Steps (1935), the professor shoots Hannay in the chest, and it appears that he is dead. However, the bullet was stopped by a hymnbook in the breast pocket of the coat he was wearing. In this movie, Ichabod is shot and saved in a similar manner. This time, the bullet lodges in a book of magic spells.

The scene with the family being attacked by the Horseman generated some talk amongst the producers and studio representatives. In particular, it was the sequence where the small child is stalked, captured, and killed (off-screen) that led some to wonder if perhaps that section should be trimmed. "I always remember as a child I hated movies with children because they were always treated differently, given the break, and we decided to treat them like everybody else."

In the flashback scene where a young Ichabod goes through the church sanctuary and then finds his mother in the torture chamber, it is an obvious callback to The Pit and the Pendulum starring Vincent Price. Namely, the way she is calling Ichabod's name and then the shot of her eyes in the torture apparatus.

(At around fifty-seven minutes) Brom (Casper Van Dien) gets a knife thrown into his leg by The Headless Horseman, which is similar to Starship Troopers (1997), where Johnny Rico (Van Dien) gets injured in the same leg by a warrior bug.

In the opening scene featuring the Van Garrett murder, the coach driver briefly drives while headless. This could be an illusion to the Irish legendary Dullahan, a harbinger of death that is seen as a headless coachman whose stopping brings death to those that see it. Van Garrett dies moments after seeing coachman.

The production notes on the DVD reveal that Johnny Depp based his characterization on the late Roddy McDowall (Fright Night (1985)), Dame Angela Lansbury (The Mirror Crack'd (1980)), and Basil Rathbone (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) and others).

The witch in the western woods was to have a larger role. Katrina would mention her during her midnight conversation with Ichabod, and the latter would later find the witch beheaded outside her home. He would deduce that she was murdered by a human killer, and then find Katrina wearing her missing necklace - further implicating Katrina as the culprit.
