The film Soldier (1998) shared the same screenwriter as the original Blade Runner (1982) - David Webb Peoples, who has stated that both films are set in the same shared universe. In "Soldier," genetically-engineered Soldiers meant to replace Todd and his fellow Soldiers are implied to be in fact replicants, continuing a theme from "Blade Runner." "2036: Nexus Dawn," set in between the original "Blade Runner" and its sequel Blade Runner 2049 (2017), implies that Nexus-9 replicants were developed in 2035, the year in which "Soldier" takes place.
2036: Nexus Dawn
This in-world short film takes place in the year 2036 and revolves around Jared Leto’s character, Niander Wallace. In this short, Wallace introduces a new line of “perfected” replicants called the Nexus 9, seeking to get the prohibition on replicants repealed. This no doubt has serious ramifications that will be crucial to the plot of Blade Runner 2049.
