Seppala, portrayed by Willem Dafoe, was known for the humane way in which he kept his dogs, at a time when such things weren't commonplace. After every Iditarod, The Seppala Humanitarian Award is awarded by the race veterinarians and is given to the musher who takes the best care of their dog team while remaining competitive during the Iditarod race and is highly prized by the mushers.

Togo and Seppala appeared on an advertisement campaign for Lucky Strike cigarettes in the late 1920s. Together with the likes of George Gershwin, Amelia Earhart and Douglas Fairbanks.

Togo was missing the tip of his right ear. This is presumed to have been caused by him agitating some Malamutes when he was still a puppy, leading to one of them mauling him. This scarring does not seem to appear in the movie.

In February 2020 a group of 14 adventurers will be running a trip called the Serum Run Trail Expedition from Nenana to Nome, AK by dog team. They will follow the same trail as the 1925 serum run.

The animated film Balto 1995 told the same story but Togo was the lead sled dog for most of the journey. Balto finished the last quarter but gets most of the credit. Hence the UNTOLD true story.

Togo passed away at the ripe old age of 16, in 1929. An impressive feat for a canine who endured as much as Togo had. He was, however, not the longest-lived member of Seppala's Serum Run team. That title goes to Fritz, who ran co-lead with Togo. He ended his days at the age of 18, in 1932.

Togo was named as such in honor of the Japanese admiral Togo Heihachiro.

Seppala trained dogs for polar explorer Roald Amundsen and they were both Norwegians. Amundsen was preparing for an expedition to the North Pole, which was later cancelled, leaving Seppala with some of the remaining dogs. After the Serum Run, Togo received a gold medal from Amundsen in Central Park, New York.

This is Disney's second movie to be filmed in the Univisium 2.00:1 aspect ratio since Lady and the Tramp (2019). Both films are on Disney+.
