Development on a movie adaptation began in 1986, long before Tom Cruise became attached to star. The 1988 Writer's Guild of America strike halted movement on the project, and in the interim, Paramount produced the television revival Mission: Impossible (1988).

Ted and John's friendship is similar to Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin. Winnie the Pooh was based on an old plush teddy bear, originally named Edward Bear, that A.A. Milne gave his son, Christopher Robin Milne, in August 1921, as a present for his first birthday. Christopher Robin (2018) basically had the same premise as this movie, but it's a Disney movie with some changes and is a family film then this films adult content.

Ted hits John across his bare buttocks with an antenna from an AM/FM radio alarm clock. This scene parodies the 1994 caning of American teenager Michael Fay, who was sentenced by the Singaporean government to six strokes of a rattan cane as punishment for theft. The caning was reduced to four strokes when the United States government declared leniency. Fay was the first known American to be caned in Singapore.

Broccoli made a rare exception to her rule, hence John gets to slaughter the tune in a performance in front of a dismayed crowd.

During the party scene with Flash Gordon (1980), Johnny does an impression of Ted and Ted says "Oh, come on, I do not sound that much like Peter Griffin!" Peter Griffin is a character on Family Guy (1999), which was created by Seth MacFarlane, who voices of Peter and Ted. Ted's voice really is the voice of Peter Griffin.
