When she is about to save Ash, Misty mentions that Ash is her burden in the Japanese version, while the dub makes it slightly more romantic by stating that Ash isn't alone because he's got her.

This is the first movie where Brock isn't a main character, though he has a cameo; when Professor Ivy calls Professor Oak to inform him of the unstable weather situation, Brock can be seen in the background, running from side to side in a frenzy (presumably doing multiple chores at the same time, as he can be seen carrying a Nidorina and a Paras). He is also seen in a picture in Ash's house in Pallet Town and making various poses in the background of a video conversation between Professors Ivy and Oak. Brock would be a main character in every other following movie until Pokémon the Movie: White - Victini and Zekrom (2011)/Pokémon the Movie: Black-Victini and Reshiram (2011), in which he makes no appearance, and onward.

That following year, the English-dub of film was produced by 4Kids Entertainment and released by Warner Bros. under the Kids' WB banner in the United States on July 21, 2000. This film earned less at the box office than its predecessor, Pokémon: The First Movie (1998), despite an increased promotional campaign from Warner Bros. and Nintendo.

In the Japanese version, the collector's ship scene where Tracey (Kenji) points out that combining water and electricity breaks down hydrogen and oxygen, and fire igniting those gases creates an explosion. Then he warns Ash (Satoshi), Misty (Kasumi), and Melody (Fluera) to duck. This was cut from the U.S. dub.

After Team Rocket decides to sacrifice themselves to save Ash, Meowth says the line, "We're gonna die", which is said in the exact same fashion and with the same face as Martin Short's character from Jungle 2 Jungle (1997). This was done intentionally, as a tip of the hat to a film that every single member of the production team loved.
